My Journey: The Detour That Changed Everything

In my first application cycle, I was rejected by all four medical schools. No interviews. I missed my required grades by just two marks. Close enough to sting, far enough to close doors. It felt like watching my future slip away over a handful of points.

But instead of giving up, I made a decision that felt like failure at the time: I chose to study diagnostic radiography. It wasn’t my Plan A, and honestly, it was hard to accept. I felt like I was settling, taking a step backward when everyone else was moving forward.

That “detour” became one of the most valuable chapters of my life.

Radiography taught me more than just clinical skills , it gave me real-world healthcare experience, taught me resilience under pressure, and showed me parts of medicine I’d never considered. More importantly, it taught me that there’s no single “right” path to where you want to go. When I finally reapplied to medical school, I wasn’t just another applicant with good grades. I had a story, experience, and a deeper understanding of why I belonged in medicine.

Today, I’m a medical student who took the long way around, and I wouldn’t change it.
